National
Security Programs Under the direction of Peter W. Rodman, the National Security Program pursued a program of research on key strategic problems in global U.S. foreign policy. These issues included NATO enlargement (including in the context of U.S.-Russia relations); the growing strategic challenge of China; U.S.-European relations; and a variety of Middle East issues such as Gulf security and Arab-Israeli diplomacy. Each year, Mr.
Rodman wrote a strategic assessment focusing on a key issue in U.S. national security
policy. The latest installment, published in June 2000, is Uneasy
Giant: The Challenges to American Predominance. Past publications include America Adrift: A Strategic Assessment
(1996); Broken Triangle: China,
Russia, and America After 25 Years (1997); Between Friendship and Rivalry: China
and America in the 21st Century (1998); and Drifting Apart? Trends in
U.S.-European Relations (1999). The
Nixon Center is currently reorganizing its National Security Program.
