Iran's Nuclear Program: Next Steps



On June 25, 2009, The Nixon Center hosted an off-the-record discussion with the White House Coordinator for Arms Control and WMD Terrorism Gary Samore. Dr. Samore discussed the issue of Iranian nuclear proliferation and the Obama administration’s strategy for coping with this threat.

Dr. Geoffrey Kemp of The Nixon Center moderated the event.

Iran - Fallout from the Elections


On Wednesday, June 24, The Nixon Center hosted a panel discussion on the repercussions of the disputed June 12 elections in Iran. The distinguished panelists were Suzanne Maloney of the Brookings Institution’s Saban Center for Middle East Policy, Hisham Melhem, Washington Bureau Chief of Al-Arabiya News Channel, and Geoffrey Kemp, Director of Regional Strategic Studies at The Nixon Center. Paul Saunders, the Center’s Executive Director, moderated the event.

Discussion with H.E. Yousef Al Otaiba


On Monday May 18, The Nixon Center hosted a luncheon event with H.E. Yousef Al Otaiba, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the United States, and H.E. Anwar Gargash, the UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. Former Senator Chuck Hagel moderated the off-the-record discussion, which focused on the state of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and engagement with Iran, as well as domestic concerns such as increased energy needs and the impact of the global financial crisis on the UAE.

Discussion with H.E. Ichiro Fujisaki, Ambassador of Japan


The Nixon Center hosted a luncheon event on May 19 with H.E. Ichiro Fujisaki, Ambassador of Japan. Ambassador Fujisaki spoke on Japan's nuclear policy, common challenges faced by the United States and Japan, and new prospects for cooperation between Washington and Tokyo in the Obama era. Dr. James Schlesinger, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the MITRE Corporation and former Secretary of Defense and Secretary of Energy, moderated the discussion. Most Iran Election Historical Analogies Are Misleading and Dangerous Nixon Center Executive Director Paul J. Saunders argues that the historical analogies used to describe the situation in Iran are flawed and warns against allowing them to skew our expectations.

A True Meaning of “Reset” Nixon Center President and National Interest Publisher Dimitri K. Simes notes that though both Russia and the United States are serious about "resetting" their relationship, the two countries have different expectations about what needs to be accomplished. He suggests that focusing on strategic arms control and finding new ways to approach the relationship could lead to a conceptual breakthrough and hopefully new momentum in the relationship.

Right-Thinking Realism Nixon Center Executive Director Paul J. Saunders defends President Barack Obama's moderate response to the protests in Iran and argues that the more aggressive stance demanded by his critics is unproductive, dangerous, and immoral.

Hit Obama for the Right Reasons Nixon Center President and National Interest Publisher Dimitri K. Simes criticizes former Vice President Richard Cheney and his daughter Liz Cheney for diverting attention away from the need of the GOP "to offer a new alternative vision to play a role as a meaningful and constructive opposition party" and to focus on what is truly crucial for the country.

Real Bridge to Nowhere; China’s Foiled North Korea Strategy Nixon Center China Director Drew Thompson and Carla Freeman of SAIS examine the economic and military dangers China faces along its border with North Korea. The paper was commissioned by USIP's Korea Working Group.

The American Academy of Arts & Sciences has published a new "Strategic Assessment" on U.S. Policy toward Russia and launched a website featuring links to all of the current work being done U.S-Russian relations.

"Perspective: The Menace in Europe's Midst" Robert S. Leiken examines the terrorist threat posed by the children of Muslim immigrants to the UK in the April edition of "Current History."

Commission on U.S. Policy toward Russia event at the Council on Foreign Relations On April 8, the Council on Foreign Relations hosted a meeting with The Commission on U.S. Policy toward Russia based on its report jointly released by the Belfer Center at Harvard and The Nixon Center. Senator Gary Hart, Co-chair of the Commission, and Dimitri K. Simes, Director of the Commission, participated in the event, as did Commission members Graham T. Allison and Maurice R. Greenberg.

The Right Direction for U.S. Policy toward Russia The bipartisan Commission on U.S. Policy toward Russia, led by Co-Chairs Senator Chuck Hagel and Senator Gary Hart, released its report at a Washington press conference on March 16. The Commission is jointly sponsored by The Nixon Center and Harvard University's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. Nixon Center President Dimitri K. Simes is the Commission's Director.

Oil losses pull Russia's claws Executive Director of The Nixon Center, Paul J. Saunders, argues that the world financial crisis provides an opportunity for the U.S. and Europe to engage Russia on energy security.

At the New America Foundation, Nixon Center President Dimitri K. Simes spoke about the rising powers and their implications for the United States at a panel discussion with G. John Ikenberry and Daniel Deudney, authors of the recent Foreign Affairs article "The Myth of the Autocratic Revival: Why Liberal Democracy Will Endure."
